What the hell?

This is in our yard right now. A huge dead Norway rat. Where did it come from? Do rats just live in the wild or what? The kids say they've seen it (alive) in the wood pile, and Mitch swears there has been a rat in the garage that is immune to rat poison. Is this the same one? Or are they like roaches, you see one, and there are 100 more hidden in the walls? And what did it die from? Maisy seems to be afraid of it even when it's dead, so I don't think she killed it. Did it have a heart attack from eating all the rich delicious food my kids leave in the basement? Old age perhaps? I am teaching 6th grade science right now, so I suppose I could take it in and we could have a lesson on how to give a rat an autopsy. Tom went outside and took this picture of it and when he came in he said, "Its kind of cute in the face." I am so grossed out by the thought of any rat being anywhere near our house. I'm terrified that they will get into the septic tank and swim up the toilets and then not only will there be rats in the house, they will be covered with poop. What could be worse than being terrorized by poop-covered rats crawling up under your covers in the middle of the night? Nothing, that's what.

  1. I have always been terrified of a rodent coming up the toilet. And now you have made it worse by letting me know they will be covered in feces. Of course! It makes sense, they wouldn't be freshly shampooed and blowdryed. GRODY!!!

  2. Sarah, Kelly can't comment on your blog. You may need to go in and add Name/URL to her options. She is dying to add her 2 cents to everything you write. Kasey's Mom

  3. Thanks, Kasey's Mom, for telling me that. I think I fixed it. I like how you were writing a note for Kelly, but then signed your name "Kasey's Mom." Hmmm, got a favorite?

  4. Sarah, I give up on you and your blog, because I can't comment!!!!! Here is my comment for your What the Hell? blog: Yesterday when reading your post I heard a mouse trap go off and Karley scream ouch. She was setting a trap in the basement with some peanut butter and it went off and got her finger. We've caught 4 mice! It all started with me straightening up the living room one morning. I picked up my new fur throw from the floor, shook it and a ton of Sylvia's dog food came pooring out. Sylvia looked at me suspiciously and I her. I thought she was mad that I found her hiding spot. Later Karley is trying on her snowboard boots for this season and finds a pile of Sylvia's dog food in her boot. We laugh, isn't it crazy she's hoarding her food like that, she's never done this before. How did she think she was gonna get it out? Oh you Sylvia, we laughed. Later Karley goes to use the dish strainer from under the kitchen sink and a pile of dog food is there! OK this is not Sylvia, she can't get under the kitchen sink, we don't leave that open. I immediately am grossed out when it dawns on me a mouse has been cuddled up in my new throw and I have been cuddled up in it after!!!! Karley is grossed out cuz a mouse has been in her boot and she put it on!!!!!

  6. Hi Kelly, I figured I had to unblock you since you told on me to your mom. (just kidding! you weren't blocked!) I've had the same experience you talked about in your comment. Stupid mice. I have really made progress on eliminating them, but I still find sunflower seeds in my underwear drawer. Gross. I'm glad the comment thing is fixed now!

  8. No one is mentioning the gross little turds that come with these mice. That is by far the grossest. Like in Lorin's old house we had mice in the lower kitchen cupboards and there were turds in the pots and pans.(we killed the mice and cleaned the cupboards and pots and pans)
